Early Designs

Kalashnikov began working on submachine and light machine gun designs in 1942 and 1943. In 1944, they gave him 7.62×39mm M43 cartridges and encouraged him to create a new rifle.In 1944, Kalashnikov created a 7.62x39mm semi-automatic carbine inspired by the M1 Garand, but lost to Simonov’s design. The Soviets struggled to distribute the new rifle to soldiers until 1956, despite ongoing production of the interim SKS rifle. The new model features a stamped sheet metal receiver, slanted muzzle brake, hammer retarder, and a cyclic rate reducer to compensate for muzzle rise under recoil, and is approximately one-third lighter than the previous model.
